So, it was up to me to decide which software we would use. I took my time, checking the various projects available, the open source ones and the commercial ones, until after registering a test project at gforge.com and playing with it for a few days i settled finally for GForge AS by GForge Group, which struck me as having a good number of features without being bloated, professional support and a cost scheme that even though wasnt free as in some of the open source alternatives, was a fair (and flat!) price for the system provided.
GForge Group's software is up to version 5.5 right now, and the system is provided by GForge Group either as a virtual machine for VMWARE or as an installer for most linux systems. We went for the first option and got it up and running in a matter of hours.
So far the system is really neat, its got all the basics, tracker, SVN integration (plus a bunch of others i've never heard of), forums, document management, wiki, a very complete notification system, etc. And what's better, GForge Group stuff is tightly integrated.
GForge Group also provides a bunch of plugin for the most notable development tools, we got licences for GForge Group's Visual Studio Plugin and Eclipse Plugin, so the next stop will be trying those. These are supposed to work over a SOAP interface to the system that GForge Group provides you docs and examples for, so perhaps we'll consider integrating some of our in house scripting tools with the system to be able to better track assets and assignments...more on that soon!
